Storm bounce back to split non-conference twinbill

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Simpson College baseball team bounced back from a tough extra-inning loss in game one to split its non-conference twinbill with Cornell on Saturday at McBride Field.

Simpson (10-9) closed the series with an 8-4 win after falling 9-8 in the 10th inning of the first game.

The Storm continue their home slate with a 6 p.m. game against Nebraska Wesleyan on Tuesday night. Buena Vista then comes to town for three games between April 8-9.

Game 1: Cornell 9, Simpson 8 (10 innings)
The Storm rallied from a 6-2 deficit to force extra innings but suffered their third one-run loss of the season after being outscored 2-1 in the 10th inning.

Ty Cowley was 3-for-4 and scored four of Simpson's eight runs including the game-tying run on a wild pitch in the eighth. Matthew Marquez doubled in a run in the fourth, Luke Willis plated two runs, and Sam Porter hit an RBI single up the middle in his first collegiate at bat.

Game 2: Simpson 8, Cornell 4
Brady Held scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth, and the Storm limited the Rams (6-11) to just one hit the rest of the way while adding three insurance tallies in the seventh for the four-run victory. Held, Brennen Lemke and Marquez each had RBIs in the inning.

Kaden Dewey went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, Lemke finished the game with three RBIs and two hits, and Held scored three times and was 3-for-4 with a walk.

Brett Kauzlarich (3-3) earned the win, allowing four runs on four hits while striking out seven in five innings of work. Cameron Liston kept Cornell at bay with just one hit in three innings, and Held struck out one in the ninth before the Rams lined into a game-ending double play.
