Track and field teams earn third place at Grinnell Invitational

GRINNELL, Iowa – Competing at their fourth meet of the indoor season, the Simpson College men's and women's track and field teams had another successful showing at the Grinnell Invitational on Saturday.

Both teams finished third as the women tallied 82 points to place behind Buena Vista (187) and Grinnell (118) and the men totaled 98.50 points to come in behind Wiliam Penn (121) and Grinnell (109.50).

"Our team took some big steps today towards the end of season goals we have," said head coach Aaron Fuller. "Max and Carter had great days, each winning two events. They are both consistently around their PR's and competing at a high level. The women's 800 was a great race today. Our girls pushed the pace and ran strong together."

Max Cleveland and Carter Berkey each won two events to combine for 40 of the men's points. Cleveland raced to first in the 200-meter dash with a personal-best time of 22.78 and won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.35 seconds. Meanwhile, Berkey went 41' 4.25'' in the triple jump and 21' 5.25'' in the long jump on his way to two gold medals.

Other individual winners for the Storm were Ean Warrick, who ran the first 3000-meter run of his career in 9:20.80 and finished 24 seconds before anyone else, and Emma Angus, who led a group of women that claimed the top-four placings in the 800-meter race. Angus crossed the finish line in 2:28.94, followed by Abby Loecke, Teghan Booth and Angel Schewe.

Simpson swept both first and second place in the distance medley relay. Angus, Isabella Mertens, Booth and Sophie Hall won the women's relay in 13:53.20, while the quartet of Harry Dudley, Hank Gardner, Jason White and Noah Nelsen completed the race in 10:51.85 to win the men's side.

Along with a pair of runner-up finishes in the distance medley relay, both the men's and women's 4x400 relays placed second. Individually, Aryss Forbes (200) and Aaliyah Johnson (long jump) finished just shy of gold in their events.
