Storm earn shutout on senior day

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- In her first career match, freshman Brenny Frederick played all 110 minutes in goal to earn a shutout after blanking Dubuque in a double-overtime draw for Simpson College women's soccer on Saturday.

Frederick saved both shots that came her way to help the Storm (0-0-1, 0-0-1 A-R-C) open their season for the second-straight year with a shutout.

Simpson had the Spartans (2-0-1, 0-0-1 A-R-C) on their heels early as sophomore Cassie Nash sent a shot towards the goal just 2:25 into the match. Junior Megan Roberts had a shot saved under the nine-minute mark in hopes of breaking open the scoring lid. The offense ended with five shots in the first 21 minutes of play.

The Storm would end the first half with seven shots and the visitors had six. The second frame was a different story for Dubuque. Simpson tightened its defence to allow the Spartans to take just one shot, compared to its five attempts.

In the overtime periods, the Storm took three shots and Dubuque had four, with one rattling off the crossbar in the 109th minute to just miss the game-winner.

Roberts ended with four shots on-goal and Nash tallied three on-frame in her Simpson debut.

The Storm showcased a lot of youth with six freshmen making an appearance. Julia Wagoner, Alexis Ponce, Anna Scott, Hailey Kowzan, Jaci Versluis and Frederick all suited up for the first time.

Before the game, Simpson honored its four seniors: Kaitlyn Bravek, Lauren Hastie, Cassidy Price and Madi Strecker.
