McChesney claims title, seven others place at BVU Open
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Dylan McChesney claimed the 125-pound bracket, Zach Stewart finished runner-up at 149 pounds, and the Simpson College men's wrestling team had eight total placewinners at the Buena Vista Open.
McChesney pinned Lane Scorpil (Iowa Wesleyan) in 4:37 to win his bracket after advancing to the finals with a fast pin against Dalton Koenig (Iowa Wesleyan) followed by two decisions. He improved to 10-3 on the season while picking up his third career tournament title.
Stewart came close to winning his second tournament of the season, but dropped a 6-1 decision to Minnesota State Mankato's Caleb Meunier in the first-place match. Earlier in the day, he pinned Adonis Henderson (Iowa Central) and Latravion Agu (Iowa Lakes) and earned decisions over his opponents from Upper Iowa and Iowa Wesleyan.
Shane Mathias (197) and Colton Kinnison (285) each went 3-1 on the day to collect bronze medals. Mathias recorded a couple of decisions before earning a medical forfeit, while Kinnison registered two pins and a 2-1 decision over Forrest Hyson (Morningside). His only loss of the day was in overtime against Alton Allen of Briar Cliff in the semifinals.
Shyler Langley (174) was edged 6-4 in his opening match, but bounced back with four straight victories to claim fifth place. He had two technical falls followed by two decisions.
Andrew Wolff pinned two opponents and ultimately finished sixth at 184 pounds, while Kanin Hable (133) and Robert Silva (165) each took seventh. Hable led the team in pins with three, with two coming in the first period. The freshman now has eight pins this season, a team-high.
