Eight wrestlers place at Luther Hill Invitational
INDIANOLA, Iowa – Shyler Langley and Hunter Klietz paved the way for the Simpson College men's wrestling team at their own Luther Hill Invitational on Saturday. The duo both took third place in their brackets, leading a group of eight placewinners.
Langley led 11 Simpson wrestlers that competed in the open division. He won four of his five matches on the day, improving to 5-1 on the young season. After a bye and an 8-3 loss, Langley rattled off three straight wins by decision before earning third place via a medical forfeit.
Klietz also captured third place while competing in the 157-pound freshman/sophomore bracket. Klietz started the morning with a first-period fall over Colin Sharp of Graceland. He added a 15-6 major decision in the quarterfinals and bounced back from a semifinal loss with 10-8 and 11-7 decisions.
Zach Stewart and Shane Mathias each went 3-2 on their way to fourth place finishes. Stewart's day was highlighted by a pin over Benedictine's Malachi Johnson in 2:07 and a 16-2 major decision over Austin Abitua of Iowa Wesleyan. Mathias recorded a late pin in his second match of the day before later earning a spot in the third-place match with a 3-1 sudden victory win over Tobias Bel (Indian Hills).
Joe Weaver picked up three wins and placed fifth at 141 pounds. He claimed an overtime win over Grand View's Ben Murphy and completed the afternoon with a pin over Fischer Valleroy of Benedictine in 2:57.
Kanin Hable registered a team-high three pins en route to a fifth place finish in the 133-pound bracket of the freshman/sophomore division.
