Storm split with Cornell, Roshek becomes hits leader

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Kacee Arey threw a three-hit shutout in game two as the Simpson softball team split its doubleheader with Cornell on Saturday, losing game one 2-0 before taking the nightcap 3-0.

Carissa Coopman went 4-for-7 with a triple to lead the Storm (24-10, 7-3 Iowa Conference).

With her fifth-inning single, Veronica Roshek became Simpson's all-time hits leader with 173. She surpassed Michelle Fowler's record of 172 set from 1996-99.

Arey Struck out five in the game two win, improving to 21-10 on the year.

Simpson dented the plate in the fourth inning. Jessica Toyne came through with a two-out, RBI single, scoring Chelsea Winegard.

The Storm put together another two-out rally in the fifth. Keri Sorensen doubled in a run before scoring two batters later on an RBI single by Tieryn Potratz.

Simpson advanced runners to third on three occasions in game one but couldn't put a run on the board.

Coopman tripled in the first inning, but got caught in a rundown after Hailey Jensen's groundout to first.

Jill Trzaska went the distance inside the circle, striking out four for the Rams (17-11, 4-4).

Simpson returns home Wednesday, April 18 to host Coe in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
