DUBUQUE, Iowa – Simpson had to come from behind twice but relied on power hitting and the strong arm of Kacee Arey to sweep Loras in its first Iowa Conference doubleheader of the season, 3-1 and 7-5 on Saturday.
Jessica Toyne homered in game one while Carissa Coopman, Hailey Jensen and Keri Sorensen all had round trippers in game two for the Storm (17-7, 2-0 Iowa Conference). Arey went the distance in both games, striking out 14. Coopman went 4-for-7 at the plate with three RBIs and three extra-base hits.
The Duhawks fell to 11-7 (0-2) with the losses.
Game 1: Simpson 3, Loras 1
The Storm fell behind 1-0 before a three-run fourth inning provided all the scoring they would need. Coopman tripled home the first run of the frame, scored on a passed ball and Toyne polished off the inning with a solo homer.
Coopman finished 2-for-3 and Veronica Roshek went 2-for-4. Arey (13-7) tossed a three-hitter and struck out nine while Kellie Klein (5-3) gave up seven hits in the loss.
Game 2: Simpson 7, Loras 5
Loras scored five runs in the first two innings and led 5-1 before Simpson blew up in the fifth.
Jensen and Sorensen started the inning with back-to-back homers, making the score 5-3. After a pitching change, Chelsea Winegard tripled and scored on a bunt by Hillary Harmon. Coopman delivered the final blow with a two-run bomb that gave the Storm a 6-5 lead and what proved to be the game-winning run.
Toyne and Jensen each went 2-for-3 and Coopman went 2-for-4 to lead the Storm at the plate.
After walking two and giving up a grand slam to Klein in the first, Arey (14-7) settled down and allowed only five hits the rest of the way. Holly Klein (0-3) took the loss in a relief appearance.
The Storm open the home schedule with three doubleheaders next week. Grinnell comes to town Wednesday, April 3, Wartburg visits on Thursday and the week concludes on Saturday against Luther.
Notes: With three hits on the day, Rohsek moved into second in Simpson career history with 165, passing Amber Ridnour's 163 (1997-2000) … Tieryn Potratz had one RBI to give her 93 for her career, one away from tying Holly Stevens (1993-96) for first in Simpson history.
