Arey solid as Storm sweep Westminster

FULTON, Mo. – Kacee Arey tossed a pair of three-hitters and the Simpson softball team swept a doubleheader with Westminster, 12-1 (5) and 3-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

Arey (12-7) struck out six in each game, throwing all 12 innings. Keri Sorensen led the offense with three hits and two RBIs as the Storm (15-7) hit .306 as a team against the Blue Jays (6-8).

Tieryn Potratz added an RBI in game one, giving her 92 on her career and moving her into sole possession of second place on Simpson's all-time list. She needs only three to pass Holly Stevens, who had 94 RBIs from 1993-96.

Simpson 12, Westminster 1 (5)
Simpson needed only one hit to put up eight runs in the first inning thanks to six walks and two Westminster errors. Kylie Van Houten provided the only hit in the frame with a two-RBI single. Sorensen doubled twice and Hillary Harmon drove in two runs. Jess Toyne added a pinch-hit, RBI double in the fifth.

Simpson 3, Westminster 1
Carissa Coopman drove in the eventual winning run with a single in the fourth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie. Hailey Jensen added an insurance run with an RBI double in the top of the seventh.

After allowing a run and having to work out of a first and third, one-out jam in the first inning, Arey went on to retire 16 of the next 18 batters she faced. She sat the Blue Jays down in order in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings before allowing a walk with one out in the seventh, ending her streak of 14 batters retired in a row.

The Storm open conference play this weekend when they travel to Dubuque to face Loras in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 31. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
