Storm defeat Buena Vista in first round of conference action

DECORAH, Iowa - The Simpson softball team's bats awakened for 13 runs in the first round of the Iowa Conference Tournament on Thursday, beating Buena Vista 13-1 in five innings.

The third-seeded Storm (28-13) pounded out 14 hits against the sixth-seeded Beavers (17-16). Simpson advances to play No. 2 Central (31-7) at 4p.m. on Thursday.

In the third inning, Simpson batted through the lineup, scoring nine runs. The Storm followed with another strong inning, scoring four in the fourth to put the game away. The first six hitters in Simpson's lineup went a combined 12-for-18, recording all 13 RBIs. Carissa Coopman led the way with two home runs and five RBIs.

Veronica Roshek went 3-for-3 as the leadoff hitter, getting Simpson started on the right foot. Tieryn Potratz drove in two runs and Keri Sorensen went 2-for-3 with a double. 

An ace in the circle, Kacee Arey (25-13) got the win, pitching five solid innings, allowing four hits and striking out six batters. 

Stephanie Hayden went 1-for-3 and drove in the lone run for Buena Vista. Chancey Wilke (14-12) took the loss.
