DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Simpson softball rode the hot bat of Hailey Jensen to a game one victory but ended the doubleheader on a sour note, splitting with Dubuque on Tuesday afternoon.
Simpson tallied 16 hits in an 11-4 win in the opener, but managed only three hits and committed four errors in a 13-1, five-inning loss in the nightcap.
The Storm (23-9, 6-2 Iowa Conference) entered the day tied with No. 5 Luther (24-4, 7-1) for first place in the league, but they relinquished the post with the game two loss and Luther's sweep of No. 3 Coe.
Jensen finished the day 3-for-6 at the plate, as did Kylie Van Houten and Chelsea Winegard. Kacee Arey got both decisions inside the circle, moving to 20-9 on the season.
Jessica Nearad went 4-for-7 with two triples and three RBIs for the Spartans (12-12, 3-5). She also threw a 3-hitter inside the circle to pick up the game-two win.
The day couldn't have started off much better for the Storm, who were riding the momentum of a 5-3 upset win against Luther on Saturday.
And nobody showed it more than Jensen.
The freshman catcher had her way with the Dubuque pitching staff in the opener, finishing 3-for-4 with two home runs, a triple, five RBIs and three runs scored.
Her first long ball was a solo shot that tied the game 1-1 after two innings. Her next was a three-run homer that sparked a six-run third inning, giving Simpson a commanding 7-2 lead after three. Her triple in the sixth inning drove in her fifth run of the game.
Van Houten went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Arey struck out four and allowed two earned runs in the complete-game win.
Game two didn't fare as well for the Storm.
Dubuque scored three in the first inning and four in the third for a commanding 7-0 lead.
Simpson managed only two hits in the first three innings and didn't dent the plate until the fourth.
The Storm will try to get back on track Saturday when they travel to Mount Vernon for a doubleheader against Cornell beginning at 2 p.m.
Notes: With two hits, Veronica Roshek tied Michelle Fowler's (1996-99) career record of 172 hits … the game two loss snapped Simpson's 51-game winning streak against Dubuque and marks the first loss to the Spartans since 1985 … Simpson is 53-3 all-time against Dubuque.
