Simpson ends season on day two of A-R-C Tournament

WAVERLY, Iowa -- The Simpson College baseball team capped off its season with losses to Luther and Loras in the American Rivers Conference Tournament on Friday at Wartburg College.

The Storm lost a tough 9-6 battle to the Norse (29-13 ), before dropping a 14-2 affair to the Duhawks (24-17), a day after clipping Loras in the A-R-C Tournament opener.

Simpson ends with an overall record of 18-23 for its most victories in a season since tallying 22 during the 2014 slate. The sixth-place finish in the league standings is the best since capturing sixth in 2016.

Game One: Luther 9, Simpson 6
The Storm jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first in hopes of winning its second tournament game this week. Noah Sacco led off with a walk and reached third before Josh Breitbarth tallied a base-on-balls as well. The duo worked together as Breitbarth sprinted to second on a delay steal that allowed Sacco to score after Luther threw the ball to second.

TJ Stephenson flexed his muscles for the second game in a row to add two more runs in the fourth coming off a two-run homer. The Norse plated a run in the bottom of the frame to trim the deficit.

Luke Willis drove in Kolton Arnold in the fifth to put the game at 4-1. The second-seeded Norse responded with four hits to tally five runs in the bottom half to grab the 6-4 lead.

Willis tallied an RBI triple to highlight a two-run seventh to knot the game at 6-6. Luther responded once again, this time with three runs to regain the tilt and hand Simpson its first loss of the tournament.

Stephenson ended 4-for-4 at the plate to highlight the Storm's six hits.

Game Two: Loras 14, Simpson 2 (7 innings)
For the second-straight game, Simpson scored in the top of the first. Arnold hit a slow roller to third base that allowed Ryan Willis to hustle home for the quick advantage.

After only scoring three runs in yesterday's contest between the two squads, Loras plated three in the bottom of the first to grab the lead. The Duhawks padded its advantage with nine more runs in the bottom of the second to place the game at 12-1. The sixth-seeded squad tallied two more in the fifth to keep the run-rule in place.

The Storm broke the scoring drought in the sixth on Josh Breitbarth's seventh homer of the season.

Sacco ended with two hits to close his career with 109 base knocks.
