Simpson falls short in doubleheader at Luther

DECORAH, Iowa -- The Simpson College baseball team dropped two games at Luther on Friday. The hosts won 6-5 and 14-10 to win the first two of a four-game series.

Both teams were nearly identical in the hit department, but the Norse (23-7, 19-3 A-R-C) held a slight 23-22 advantage. Brady Held paced the Storm (10-18, 7-15 A-R-C) with four hits, while Josh Breitbarth blasted another homer.

Game One: Luther 6, Simpson 5
Simpson plated four runs in the first three innings to grab the lead. Noah Sacco delivered a run-scoring single in the second, while the squad scored twice in the third on three hits and two errors.

The offense slowed with just two hits over the next three frames. Luther landed on the scoreboard in the sixth by scoring five runs to grab a 5-4 lead. The hosts recorded four hits to go out in front.

The Storm knotted the game at 5-5 in the top of the seventh on Breitbarth's fifth homer of the season. The Norse returned with a run-scoring double in the seventh for the walk-off triumph.

Held recorded two hits in the contest and Keaton DeKock ripped a double.

Game Two: Luther 14, Simpson 10
After falling down 5-0 after two innings, Simpson sprinkled eight runs over the next three frames to garner the lead. Held had an RBI in the third before the Norse committed an error in the fourth to plate a run.

In the fifth, the Storm had 11 batters step-up to the plate to receive five hits for six runs. Sacco recorded a two-run double to highlight the inning. Luther responded with six runs of its own in the fifth to regain the lead at 11-8.

Chris Miller trimmed the deficit to one after connecting on a two-run single in the sixth.

The Norse padded the lead with some insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings to push the tilt to 14-10.

Miller ended with three hits, while Ryan Willis, Kolton Arnold, Zach Fuller, Sacco and Held all had two. Sacco is now two away from 100-career hits.
