STORM LAKE, Iowa — Noah Sacco had a big day at the plate but the Simpson College baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader against Buena Vista on Saturday. Buena Vista won game one 6-3 and took a wild game two 15-14.
Sacco had four hits and four RBIs for the Storm (3-5, 0-2 American Rivers), doing most of his damage in game two. The senior hit two home runs and a two-RBI double in the nightcap.
Game One: Buena Vista 6, Simpson 3
Jordan Mathewson hit a two-run triple in a four-run second inning as Buena Vista (4-3, 2-0) built a 6-1 lead after five innings.
Sacco and Kolton Arnold hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the sixth. Brady Held and Brennen Lemke plated RBIs to cut the lead to 6-3. But Tyler Tennyson retired Simpson in order in the seventh to secure the complete-game win.
Held took the loss on the mound for Simpson. He went five innings, allowing six runs (five earned) off seven hits.
Game Two: Buena Vista 15, Simpson 14
Sacco hit a leadoff home run in the ninth to tie the game 14-14 but Dominick Roderick hit a walk-off single to end a wild, four-hour game.
A two-RBI single by Arnold helped the Storm build a 6-2 lead in the third. But Buena Vista responded with eight runs in the bottom of the third to take a 10-6 lead.
The Storm had the next big inning. After a scoreless fourth, Simpson put up six in the fifth behind two-run doubles from Sacco and Brady Held. Zach Hollingsworth added a solo homer in the sixth to give Simpson a 13-10 lead.
Buena Vista chipped away at the lead with two runs in the seventh. The Beavers took a 14-13 lead on Tennyson's two-run homer.
