Storm take on Monmouth in final nonconference tune-up

MONMOUTH, Illinois -- Noah Sacco reached base eight times, and Brady Held and Brennen Lemke both had home runs as Simpson College baseball dropped a pair of games at Monmouth on Saturday.

The Scots (2-2) collected a 10-7 triumph in the opener and closed the day with a 4-2 victory in the Storm's (3-3) final nonconference tune-up of the year.

Sacco reached base via walk on six occasions this weekend to keep his on-base percentage at .731 to lead the American Rivers Conference. His nine hits are tied for third as well.

Game One
Monmouth 10, Simpson 7
Simpson rattled off 13 hits during the game for its most of the season. Chris Miller, Luke Willis, Sacco and Lemke each had two hits to pace the offense. On the mound, Simpson's pitchers struck out 10 batters to tie a season high.

The Storm scored right away in the top of the first on an RBI groundout by Willis and added another run in the third on a single from Sacco.

Monmouth tacked on three runs to steal the lead through the third and fourth innings before Simpson tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth. The Scots regained the lead in the bottom of the frame and padded the advantage with four runs in the sixth.

With the score set at 8-3 in the top of the eighth, Lemke connected on a two-run homer to trim the deficit. Monmouth responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning and Simpson tallied two runs in the top of the ninth for a late rally, but could not come any closer.

Game Two
Monmouth 4, Simpson 2
In his first outing of the season, Brady Leonard tossed six innings of three-hit ball and allowed only two runners to score, with one being earned.

The Storm tallied two runs in the first coming off Held's bat with a two-run blast, the first of the season for the junior.

The Scots added a run in the second and third innings, and the game remained tied through the sixth inning before the hosts scored two in the bottom of the seventh. Monmouth held onto the lead the rest of the way.
