Baseball closes weekend with 9-2 win at Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa — Colton Major threw eight solid innings, the offense supplied three home runs and the Simpson College baseball team beat Buena Vista 9-2 Sunday, securing a split in the doubleheader.

The Beavers (5-4, 3-1 American Rivers) won game one 13-7 and took three of four in the weekend series.

Major gave the Storm (4-6, 1-3) a much-needed quality start, holding Buena Vista to just two hits through eight innings. He left the game after allowing back-to-back doubles to begin the ninth, but Dunston Werner recorded the final three outs to seal the win. Major struck out seven on the day and walked just one.

Noah Sacco set the tone for Simpson's offense with a leadoff homer, the first of three Storm long balls in the game. Zach Hollingsworth added a solo shot in the third and Quinten Sefrit did the same in the fourth. Simpson scored in each of the first four innings and built a 9-0 lead by the end of the sixth.

Sacco, Sefrit and Kolton Arnold all had three hits to lead the Storm. Arnold missed out on the cycle by a home run, hitting a single in the second, a double in the sixth and a triple in the seventh. Brennen Lemke finished with a team-high three RBIs.

In game one, Simpson spotted Buena Vista five runs in the first three innings and couldn't recover.

Brady Held drove in three of the Storm's seven runs, hitting a solo homer in the sixth. Sacco added two doubles and an RBI and Lemke finished 2-for-5 at the plate.

Parker Truesdell sparked the Buena Vista offense with four hits and three RBIs. His RBI double capped a three-run first inning and he drove in a run on a single in the two-run second.

Simpson opens the home schedule Thursday, April 1 when it hosts Loras in a doubleheader. The four-game series continues with games three and four Saturday, April 3.
