No. 9: Men’s soccer knocks off Central 1-0

The No. 9 top moment of the year came from the team which kept us on the edge of our seats every time it hit the pitch.

The surprise story in the Iowa Conference, the Storm men’s soccer team finished the year 8-10-1, including a 5-3 mark and a third-place finish in the conference. Under the direction of first-year head coach Rick Isaacson, the upstart group showed a flair for the dramatic, winning six of its eight games by one goal including three golden-goal triumphs.

Arguably the most memorable win of the season came on Senior Night. With a shot at the No. 3 seed in the IIAC Tournament on the line, the long-time rival Central Dutch visited Buxton Stadium on Oct. 19.

With the score tied 0-0 at the half, Simpson got a break 9 minutes into the second when the Dutch committed a foul just outside of the penalty box. Senior Chris Allen took the ensuing free kick and made the most of the opportunity. He fired a low-liner that went through the Central wall and snuck inside the near post for the game-winner.

The Storm won the game 1-0 and earned the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament, completing the program’s best season since 2006.
