Reinert's goals not enough for Storm against Elmhurst

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Simpson men's soccer team got a pair of goals from Jeremy Reinert but Elmhurst's Brian McMahon scored the game-winner in the 84th minute, giving the Bluejays a hard-fought, 3-2 win Saturday afternoon.

McMahon found the back of the net on a 50/50 ball five yards from the goal, the deciding tally in a physical non-conference match.

"We knew Elmhurst was physical and athletic and we knew they'd bring a lot of pace
to the game," head coach Rick Isaacson said. "I was proud of our effort. We battled hard, but in the end we just fell short."

The Storm (1-1) were outshot for the second game in a row, but again made the most of their opportunities.

Reinert opened the scoring in the 12th minute, finding the far post from the right wing. Ken Miller provided the equalizer in the 13th minute before Keith Thurman gave the Bluejays (1-1) the lead at the 36 minute mark.

Reinert tied the game 2-2 shortly before halftime when Kyle Kusy found him behind the defense, allowing him to get past the keeper and take advantage of the empty net.

With six goals in the first two games, Isaacson is happy with the progress his team has made thus far.

"The boys are buying into the system, they're learning it and i think we'll only continue to get better," Isaacson said.

Luke Aronow made seven saves between the posts for the Storm, who travel to Minnesota next weekend for a pair of non-conference matches. Simpson goes to Bethel Sept. 9 for a 3 p.m. kickoff and faces Crown on Sept. 10 in a 4 p.m. start.
