Simpson struggles in second half, falls to Northwestern

 Rick Isaacson Post Game Interview

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Northwestern responded to a slow first half with three goals in the second frame in a 3-0 win over the Simpson men's soccer team on Saturday at Buxton Stadium.

Only 10 shots were taken between the two teams in the first half, leading to a scoreless tie at intermission.

"We did a good job of being compeititve and finding chances to score for 45 minutes but the wheels kind of came off in the second half," head coach Rick Isaacson said.

The Red Raiders (4-2-1) controlled the pace in the second half, out-shooting Simpson 24-10. Taylor Biggs, Leo Sanchez and Brandon Hammack all found the back of the net and Mario Garcia assisted on two goals.

Northwestern ended the day with a 24-10 edge in shots, putting 10 on goal to Simpson's three.

"It was a matter of a lack of execution in the second half," Isaacson said. "We made mistakes at untimely situations in bad parts of the field and they were able to capitalize."

Mitchell White proved the most dangerous threat for the Storm (2-4), taking three shots. Luke Aronow made seven saves in goal.

"We've got to work smarter and not harder," Isaacson said. "That's a recurring theme with this team. The work rate is where it needs to be and we can compete with teams from a work ethic standpoint, but we are struggling to play smart soccer."

Simpson looks to end its two-game losing streak tomorrow (Sunday, Sept. 18) when it hosts Culver-Stockton. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
