Storm track and field teams return to Waverly with additional success

WAVERLY, Iowa - Two weeks after competing at Wartburg, the Simpson men and women's track and field teams returned for more success at the Liz Wuertz Invite, Saturday.

The Storm had three individual wins across the meet. Max Cleveland tied his career-best in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.18 in the prelims and then won the final in 8.20. Cleveland has now ran five times of 8.20 or faster in his career, all coming this indoor season. Carter Berkey continues to be a force in the long jump, recording his third straight jump of seven or more meters, winning the event with a mark of 7.13 meters. For the women, Madison Hays competed in the 600 meters, winning with a career-best 1:40.11, which puts her only around a second off of cracking into the top five in school history.

Starting with the women, Teghan Booth entered into another all-time performance list. Her time of 5:17.37 in the mile was good for sixth overall and gives her the fifth-fastest time in school history. Aryss Forbes set career-bests in the 60 meters (8.41) and the 400 meters (1:02.90), while Aaliyah Johnson ran a career-best on the track in the 60 meter hurdles (10.01) and then moved to the field, throwing a career-best shot put toss of 11.10 meters. The Storm had a host of 800 meter runners, led by a trio that all set career-bests. Ava Carder ran a 2:28.26, Kate Huisinga clocked a 2:29.85, and Skyler Blessman came in at 2:31.33.

The men also saw one runner go up the all-time list. Andrew Klein placed second in the mile with a time of 4:21.90, moving him up one spot to ninth all-time. The Storm also had three other milers in the top seven, starting with Ean Warrick coming in third with a career-best 4:25.23. Cade Mash finished in fourth with a time of 4:27.14 and Brody Wirtz clocked a career-best 4:30:48 to take seventh.

Ulysses Patterson was the fastest Storm runner in the 60 meters, recording a career-best 7.34. Shaymus Santiago (7.39) and Clarke Latcham (7.40) also set career-bests in the distance. Both Santiago and Latcham also set career-bests in another event, with Santiago completing the 200 meters in 24.16 and Latcham running an 8.98 in the 60 meter hurdles.

The Storm now prepare for the American Rivers Conference Championships, which take place next Friday and Saturday in Storm Lake, Iowa on the campus of Buena Vista.
