Storm conclude weekend across two states

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Simpson College men and women's track and field teams concluded a weekend of competition at the Bearcat Invite in Maryville, Mo. and the Wartburg Indoor Select in Waverly, Iowa.

A host of Storm runners put in great performances on Friday at the Bearcat Invite in Missouri. Lara Kallem and Teghan Booth vaulted themselves into the top five in school history in the 5000 meters. Kallem's time of 18:30.63 puts her third all-time, while Booth clocked an 18:36.62 to claim the fourth-best time in school history.

On the men's side, Marc Medici took a minute off his career-best, finishing in fifth place with a time of 15:32.65. Andrew Klein and Brody Wirtz also went sub 16 minutes, both setting career-bests in the process.

In Waverly at the Wartburg Indoor Select, all eyes were going to be on the men's 3000 meters in the highly anticipated battle between Spencer Moon and Wartburg's Christopher Collet. Moon broke away from Collet and the pack around the 1000 meter mark and led by just over 12 seconds with 400 meters to go. Collet closed in a sub-60 second 400, but Moon held him to win by around five seconds, clocking a time of 8:15.79, tenths of seconds off his own school record. Moon's time also earned him the facility record and the distinction of being top 10 in the nation in three events: the mile, the 3000 meters, and the 5000 meters.

Max Cleveland took first place in the 60 meter hurdles, winning the final in a time of 8.20 after qualifying in the prelims in first place. Brendan Godbout also qualified for the final and ran a time of 8.60, a career-best. Blake DePhillips ran his first career collegiate 200 meter, leading the Storm with a time of 24.05, the second fastest time by a Storm runner this year. Carter Berkey, fresh off breaking the indoor school long jump record last week, took second in the event with a mark of 6.86 meters. Ulysses Patterson also set a new career-best in the pole vault with a mark of 3.86 meters.

For the women, Maddie Hays lowered her 400 meter time to 1:00.25, grabbing fifth place in a field loaded with top talent from around the conference. Hays then ran the second leg of the 4x400 relay, joined by her teammates Ava Carder, Aryss Forbes, and Audrey Arnold. The quartet combined to run a 4:13.96, a season-best in the event for the Storm.
