Minette breaks own school record in 50 yard freestyle

GRINNELL, Iowa - Kate Minette of the Simpson College women's swimming and diving team lowered her own record in the 50 yard freestyle at the Pioneer Classic.

Minette clocked a blistering 24.52 in the event, beating her previous best of 24.57 that was also set at last year's edition of the Pioneer Classic.

"It's amazing to see everything carry over from practice into our races, especially now that we're rested," said Storm head coach Adam Cvetich. "We've been working on a lot, they've done a great job focusing, and it's paying off with some great times on the scoreboard."

WOMEN'S RECAP

  • Minette's time put her in third place in the event out of 51 swimmers.
  • Keelin Curley took seventh with a time of 25.65, a new career-best.
  • The 200 yard freestyle team of Minette, Curley, Katie Oosterhuis, and Breana Hinson also came within .01 seconds of tying the school record with a time of 1:42.94.
  • Minette also swam a blistering 23.99 in the anchor leg for the Storm, the first time she has gone sub-24 in a 50 yard relay leg.
  • Oosterhuis also clocked a time of 2:27.07 in the 200 yard individual medley, beating her career-best by around seven seconds.

MEN'S RECAP

  • Christopher Olds swam a great 500 yard freestyle, setting a new career-best by seven seconds with a time of 5:14.57.
  • All four Simpson swimmers in the 50 yard freestyle, Olds, Jay Ceperley, Nathan Parkins, and Gabe Bruns, set season-bests. Olds also tacked on another career-best with a time of 25.88.
  • The quartet combined on the 200 yard freestyle relay for a time of 1:38.17, beating the previous season-best by over four seconds.
  • Ceperley swam a 23.02 on the opening leg for the Storm, one of the fastest splits of his career.
