Schilke guides Storm over No. 9 Coe

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Emily Schilke held the highest-scoring offense in the American Rivers Conference to one run as the Simpson softball team won 3-1 against ninth-ranked Coe on Wednesday after falling 14-1 in the doubleheader opener.

In front of the large crowd at the Simpson Softball Complex, the Storm surged for three runs in the win, while the team has only plated five runs total in its last four contests.

The Storm are now 19-17 and 6-8 in conference and the Kohawks are 31-8, 11-5.

Camrey Leo provided the spark on offense by sending her first homer over the centerfield fence to break the shutout and perfect game in one swing in the sixth inning. Ashley Allen secured the team's other hit in the seventh.

Coe was on the attack early and plated a run in each inning through the first three to take a 3-0 advantage. Simpson stopped the Kohawks in the fourth, but the visitors rallied and added three in the fifth, two in the sixth and five in the seventh to increase the lead.

The Storm used five pitchers as Emily Bell got the start and took the loss to move to 10-5 during her sophomore campaign. Arianna Kim, Randie Richmond and Bell each had two strikeouts inside the circle.

Schilke pitched a five-hitter against the Kohawks and only allowed one run, while striking out two batters to give the Storm the much needed victory. Schilke used two one-two-three innings to keep the high-powered offense at bay.

Coe went up 1-0 in the first after scoring on a perfectly-placed bunt.

Simpson answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take its first lead of the day. Kim started the inning off with a single and stole second to advance to scoring position. The senior was moved over to third by classmate, Kayla Reusche, who laid down a sacrifice bunt. Kim would then score on a wild pitch and Sara Trent would score Megan Crockett on a sacrifice fly.

Brynna Bowman led the second off with a double and ended up scoring on a passed ball to increase the team's advantage to 3-1.

Schilke is now 3-3 on the year and lowered her earned run average to 3.37.

While sitting tied for sixth in the standings with Dubuque, Simpson heads to Buena Vista this weekend for a doubleheader on Saturday. There has been a time change for the game and first pitch will now be at noon, the second game will follow in Storm Lake, Iowa.
