CLERMONT, Fla. -- Sara Trent was the hero in the 2-1 win over Fredonia for the Simpson softball team on Saturday. Trent ripped a walk-off single to push the Storm to victory, before claiming a 9-5 win over Potsdam in the nightcap.
Simpson improved to 4-1 in the early comings of the season. The squad will face Franklin & Marshall on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. (CT) and the University of Concordia Chicago at 10:45 a.m. (CT).
Simpson 2, Fredonia 1
Down 1-0 in the final inning, Emily Bell got the inning started with a double and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by Amron Born. Born stole second and advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Trent's single with two outs to seal the win for the Storm.
Fredonia (1-3) opened up the scoring in the fifth inning on a RBI single. Up until that point, Bell only gave up two hits in the contest and finished with three total.
Bell finished with a complete game and tallied seven strikeouts. Bell and Trent each had two hits, both reached extra bases with a double, and Madison Rogers added a single.
Simpson 9, Potsdam 5
Simpson jumped on the board early with two runs in the bottom of the first. Born scored on a pass ball after reaching to third on an error. Claire Oetting picked up her first career RBI by hitting in Kayley Thomas.
The Storm held the lead for another inning before Potsdam (0-1) added four runs to take the lead. Simpson regained the advantage in the bottom of fourth by plating four runs. Camrey Leo was hit by a pitch that scored a run with the bases loaded and Thomas belted a single to centerfield that scored Miranda Hughes and Born. Arianna Kim drew a walk in the inning as well that resulted in another run for Simpson.
In the fifth, the Storm plated three more runs that was highlighted by a double from Megan Crockett. The Bears would claw at the lead and put up one run in the seventh, but Brooke Fonley closed the door on the comeback.
Randie Richmond secured the win in two innings of work with one strikeout. Born, Crockett and Thomas all had two hits.
