DECORAH, Iowa -- The Simpson softball team nearly pulled off an upset of No. 24 Luther in game one and had the lead late in game two of the doubleheader, but could not hold on. The Storm fell 2-0 in the opener and 14-6 in six innings.
The Storm battled the Norse to move to 15-13 overall and 2-6 in American Rivers Conference play. The Norse remained hot and are now 24-3 and 6-0 in conference after winning their last 13 contests.
Luther 2, Simpson 0
Emily Bell was inside the circle for the Storm and went for six innings and only allowed two runs to a team that's scoring just over six runs a game. Her earned-run average is 1.70 and is fifth-best in the league.
At the plate, Simpson had six hits compared to its counterpart only having five. Arianna Kim led the team with two hits.
In the top of the seventh, the Storm put a late rally together and had runners on first and second with no outs, but could not make anything happen at the plate and stranded the two runners.
The Norse put a run across early after a one-out homer in the first inning sparked their offense. Luther scrapped another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly. Camrey Leo made a nice-running catch in deep centerfield to prevent the rally from continuing as the Norse settled for one run.
Luther 14, Simpson 6 (six innings)
Simpson took a one-run lead in the top of the fifth inning after scoring four runs in the frame to rally from a three-run deficit.
Megan Crockett drilled a three-run homer in the inning to help carry the offense and Emily Schilke responded with an RBI single to increase the lead further.
Luther turned the tide in the bottom of the frame by scoring five runs to regain the advantage at 10-6. The Storm did not do themselves any favors in that inning and committed four of their five errors during that span.
Luther was able to add four more runs in the sixth on a grand slam for a the walk-off winner.
Simpson scored once in the second inning on an Ashley Allen home run, her first on the year and again in the third inning on Kayla Reusche's RBI double.
Allen paced the team with two hits and Crockett now has four long balls this year.

The Storm pause in their action and resume play on Tuesday, April 23 at Nebraska Wesleyan for a doubleheader. First game will start at 3 p.m.
