CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Simpson softball team split both its games for the third consecutive day on Thursday. The Storm won 4-2 over Bridgewater State and came up just short against Wheaton to fall 5-4.
The Storm are now 4-0 all-time against Bridgewater State and are even at 2-2 against Wheaton. Overall, Simpson is .500 at 6-6 with four games left in Florida. The squad hits the field tomorrow at 8:15 a.m. (CT) against Becker and 10:30 a.m. (CT) verse Smith.
Simpson 4, Bridgewater State 2
Arianna Kim and Sara Trent opened the scoring in the first inning with RBI groundouts after Kayley Thomas and Megan Crockett had back-to-back singles to begin the bottom of the first.
The Bears (2-8) responded quickly and tallied two runs in the top of the second to even the score once more.
Kayla Reusche had an RBI knock in the fourth and Amron Born hit in a runner as well to give Simpson a 4-2 tilt.
The Simpson pitching staff held off a late rally in the seventh when two runners were on with two outs, but got the last batter to pop up to end it.
Reusche paced the team with two hits and she had a stolen base.
Inside the circle, Arianna Kim started the contest and went for three innings of work. Emily Schilke earned her first win of the season and tossed one inning. Lizzy Adams tallied the team's first save of the year.
Wheaton 5, Simpson 4
The Thunder used a five-run fifth inning to jump out in front at 5-3 and survived a late rally to win. Wheaton had three singles in the inning and forced two Storm errors.
Simpson pushed a runner across the plate in the top of the first inning after Emily Bell drilled a double to right field that scored Camrey Leo from first. In the fourth, Brynna Bowman hit a double to score Madi Bennett and Leo had another double that plated Bowman.
In the sixth inning, Kat Velasquez used her stellar running ability to steal two bases and score on a single by Leo to cut the deficit to one. The Storm had runners on third and second with one out but bunted into a double play to end the game.
Emily Bell had seven strikeouts in her six innings of work inside the circle. Bowman and Leo both finished with two hits.
