CLERMONT, Fla. -- A pair of late comebacks fell short for the Simpson softball team on Sunday against Concordia Chicago and Franklin & Marshall. The Storm lost 5-4 in both matchups on the third day of competition in Florida.
Simpson moved to 3-3 overall and will compete against Pittsburgh-Greensburg at 12:30 p.m. and Stockton at 1:45 p.m. (CT). Both contests will be at the Hancock Complex on field two.
Franklin & Marshall 5, Simpson 4
The Diplomats (1-0) bolted out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning with the help of four hits off of Kelli Hanson. The Storm responded with a run in the second after Madi Bennett doubled to score Lexi Morrison.
Franklin & Marshall would add another run in the third. The Storm cut the deficit in half at 4-2 in the fourth on a single by Megan Crockett that plated Kayla Reusche. Simpson would tie the game in the fifth. Sara Trent started the inning with a double and moved to third on an infield single from Olivia Allen. Morrison would get a sacrifice fly and Allen would later score on a single from Madison Rogers.
The Diplomats would regain the lead in the bottom half of the inning after Lexi Piccinich belted a home run.
Hanson would be tabbed with the loss in her first start of the season. Allen, Bennett and Trent paced the squad with two hits each.
Concordia Chicago 5, Simpson 4
Concordia Chicago (2-0) tallied its five runs over the first three innings and held on late to win.
Things got interesting over the last two innings as the Storm put three runs on the scoreboard in the sixth. Camrey Leo ripped a single to score Amron Born. Ashley Allen followed with a double and would later score on a two-RBI single from Liv Erickson.
In the seventh, Megan Crockett doubled to score Bennett and moved Reusche to third. Trent would then fly out to center and Reusche went to tag from third, but would be called out for leaving early.
Lizzy Adams was tabbed with the loss in her first start in a Simpson uniform. Erickson finished with two hits and two RBIs.
