Garrison named outstanding performer at Darren Young Indoor Classic

GRINNELL, Iowa -- Craig Garrison was named the men's track outstanding performer after winning two races at the Darren Young Indoor Classic on Saturday to lead the Simpson track and field squads.

The Storm men tied for second with 99 points out of nine squads, while the women ended in seventh.

Garrison won the 60-meter dash in 7:02 to move into the top 10 in program history in the event. The sophomore followed up the performance with a blistering time of 22:56 in the 200 for another gold. His time in the 200 meters is fifth best in school history.

Carter Fricke was unable to pass Garrison in either the 60 or 200 to finish second in both events. Fricke ran a mark of 7:05 in the 60 and crossed the finish in 22:98 in the 200. Quentin Linnan grabbed third place in the 800 meters with a personal-best 1:59.33 to join Fricke and Garrison with a top-three finish.

The 3,000 meters provided some top marks for Simpson this weekend. On Friday, Spencer Moon broke his previous school record with a time of 8:34.45 at the South Dakota State Indoor Classic to finish third. Jonathan Facio ended in fifth today in the 3,000, while Eric Baldus and Noah Nelsen both wrapped up top-10 finishes.

Garrison provided the leadoff leg of the 4x400-meter relay that garnered fourth place with the help of Quentin Linnan, Carter Fricke and Kellen Fitch. The distance medley relay of Josh Paulson, Austin Greenwalt, Ryan Courtney and Shane Breheny grabbed second.

Greenwalt wrapped up high jump with a second-place nod for the team's best showing in a field event. Berkey ended fourth in the long jump with a leap of 6.49 meters and Caleb Striegel launched the shot put 14.17 meters for fourth.

Katie Murano led the women with a fifth-place showing in the 5,000 meters. Abby Loecke (800) and Mackenzie Laughlin (mile) tallied eighth-place nods in their respective events for the Storm.

The distance medley group of Katelyn Mangold, Cat Lucht, Laughlin and Loecke finished third, while the 4x200 relay of Mackenzie Blomgren, Sarah Nolting, Meagan Blomgren and Makayla Baker recorded fifth place.
