Simpson cruises past Dubuque

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The Simpson women's basketball team tallied 35 points in the third quarter alone and pulled away from Dubuque to notch a 91-55 win on Saturday.

With only a two-point lead at halftime, the Storm (16-3, 8-2 A-R-C) went on a 13-3 run to open the flood gates in the third quarter. Three different players made a triple during that run for Simpson. After the Spartans (3-17, 1-10) tallied a basket, Simpson also went on runs of 11-5 and 11-3 to end the quarter.

During the big third quarter, Jenna Taylor netted 12 of her 19 points and shot 5 of 9 from the floor. Taylor came within two points of scoring as much as Dubuque's team during the period.

The Storm kept the pressure going in the fourth and placed 25 more points in the scoring column and only allowed the visitors to manage 12. Simpson had eight players score during the last quarter, with all of them coming off the bench. The Storm tallied 15 points from behind the arc in the last 10 minutes of play and held the Spartans to nine for the whole game.

The Storm scored more points in the last two quarters than the Spartans did all game.

Simpson jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead in the first quarter, before Dubuque went on a 20-12 spurt over the next 10-plus minutes of game action and tied the game at 22-22. The teams would tie two more times during the second period and the Spartans even claimed a two-point advantage until the Storm went on top for good with under-three minutes to play in the second.

Taylor not only made her presence known on offense, but on defense as well and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Rachel Freland tallied 17 points and four steals, while shooting 50-percent from the field. Cameron Kincaid had 11 points and went a perfect 7-for-7 at the charity stripe.

Kia Dwight scored 16 points and Jaden Kelley had 15 to lead Dubuque.

GAME NOTES

Simpson made 12 3-pointers during the contest and made its most in a five-game stretch. The Storm still sit at 10th in the country with a 37.7 percent clip from behind the arc for the year. Simpson was out-rebounded 42-40 in the game, but forced 23 turnovers and had 36 points stem from those mistakes.
