Storm set school 3-point record at Loras

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- Despite draining 17 3-pointers on Saturday at Loras, the Simpson women's basketball team could not overthrow the Duhawks and lost 94-79.

The Storm (16-5, 8-4 American Rivers Conference) broke the school record for most made 3-pointers in a season and now have 222 for the year with four regular season games left. The previous record was 216 that was set during the 2011-12 season.

Simpson jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead on 3-pointers by Claire Johnson and Jenna Taylor. Johnson made another basket to push it to 8-6, but Loras (18-4, 11-2 A-R-C) showed they can drain the long ball as well and rattled off five treys over the next six minutes to take a 29-19 lead into the second period.

Simpson opened up the quarter with a triple from Janey Botkins and Cameron Kincaid knocked down a 3-pointer, but Loras retaliated with a jumped to widen the gap to 13 points. The Storm fired back and went on an 11-0 run to come within two, due in large part to three different players knocking down a triple and Johnson connecting on two baskets. The Duhawks halted Simpson's momentum with a 12-0 run that gave the team a 52-38 lead at the half.

During the third quarter, Simpson stayed around and kept the game close with only a five-point deficit. Loras kept its foot on the gas and stretched the advantage to a 22-point lead over the course of 10 minutes of game action.

Both teams were hitting their shots from behind the arc. Simpson shot 42.5 percent and Loras had an impressive 64.7 percent clip and shot 55.2 percent from the floor, compared to the Storm's 46.8 percent.

The offensive productivity was split fairly even for the Storm as five players scored in double figures. Cassie Chubb had 17 points, Rachel Freland scored 13, Johnson had 16, Taylor had 12 and Kincaid netted 10. Taylor led the squad on the glass with seven boards. Chubb went 5 of 7 from deep coming off the bench.

Marissa Schroeder paced all scorers with 28 points, while teammates Kari Fitzpatrick and Macenzie Kraemer scored in double-figures as well.

GAME NOTES

The Storm have now made five 3-pointers in the first quarter in two-straight games … at the charity stripe, Simpson has had four makes in its last two outings in only 11 attempts total … the Duhawks have scored an average of 99.0 points over their last two contests.
