CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Abbie VanVleet threw a one-hitter in game one, earned the win in relief in game two and Rachel Guessford hit the go-ahead home run in the seventh inning of the nightcap as the Simpson softball team swept Coe on Wednesday, 3-0 and 5-4.
Simpson trailed 4-3 in the top of the seventh in game two when Guessford crushed a two-run homer to center. VanVleet pitched the final two innings in relief of Riley Fisher, getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth as the Storm (25-6, 4-2 Iowa Conference) earned their first road sweep against Coe since 1999.
Mallory McArtor went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in game two to lead the Kohawks (17-7, 1-5), who lost their third in a row.
Simpson goes to Loras on Saturday, April 16. The Duhawks (10-14, 0-4) split a non-conference contest with Cornell on Wednesday.
Game One
VanVleet helped out her own cause with a RBI double in the second inning, giving Simpson a 1-0 lead. A double by Arianna Kim and a single by Taylor Davis brought in two insurance runs in the seventh, more than enough room for VanVleet.
The senior hurler recorded her 40th career win and ninth career shutout, carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning before Maddy Ryan broke it up with a single up the middle. The single and an error put runners at first and second with no outs in the seventh, but VanVleet induced three straight fly-outs to end the game. She finished with three strikeouts and two walks.
Game Two
The Storm led 3-1 before a two-RBI single by McArtor sparked a three-run fifth, giving Coe a 4-3 advantage.
Both teams went scoreless in the sixth until Davis led off the seventh with a single. She scored one batter later on Guessford's IIAC-leading eighth home run of the season.
VanVleet entered the game in sixth inning in relief of Fisher, working out of a bases-loaded jam in her first inning of work. She allowed a pair of two-out singles in the seventh to put runners at the corners before getting Sara Czachowski to line out to short.
Fisher and Tori Haag also homered for the Storm and Guessford finished with three RBIs. VanVleet registered her 200th career strikeout in the nightcap.
