Storm post convincing sweep against Dubuque

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Riley Fisher homered in game one, struck out eight and drove in two runs in game two and the No. 22 Simpson softball team got a much-needed sweep against Dubuque on Saturday, winning game one 7-2 and game two 6-1.

The Storm (23-6, 2-2 Iowa Conference) needed a pair of wins to remain in the thick of the conference race after getting swept by Central earlier in the week.

With the losses, the Spartans (7-17, 0-2) saw their losing streak increase to six games as they committed seven errors on the day.

Game One
Rachel Guessford went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Abbie VanVleet allowed just six hits and one earned run in the complete-game effort.

Guessford drove in two on a single in the first as Simpson jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Dubuque pulled within a run with two in the fourth, but Tori Haag provided some breathing room with an RBI double in the home half.

Simpson put it out of reach in the sixth when Guessford roped a two-RBI double to the right field corner and Fisher hit a solo shot well over the left field fence. Haag finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and VanVleet (10-2) struck out three and walked one.

Game Two
Fisher was perfect through three innings before issuing back-to-back walks to start the fourth. Dubuque followed with back-to-back sacrifice bunts that scored its only run of the game.

Fisher (11-1) fanned eight in the complete-game three-hitter, the only blemish on her day coming in the fourth. She helped herself out with a two-RBI single in the second when Simpson plated four to take a commanding lead.

Haag drove in a run on a single in the fifth and pinch-hitter Ashley Allen added a sacrifice fly for the final margin. Brianna Chaplin went 3-for-3 with a double and VanVleet went 3-for-4.

Notes: With three hits on the day, Haag improved her career total to 177, three shy of tying the career record ... her three RBIs give her 98 for her career, 13 shy of tying the school record.

Next up: Simpson goes to Coe on Wednesday, April 13. Start time is set for 3 p.m.
