KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Abbie VanVleet and Riley Fisher gave the Simpson softball team a pair of brilliant pitching performances and the Storm went 2-0 on their second day at the Rebel Spring Games, beating Carroll (Wis.) 4-2 and No. 16 Kean 7-0.
VanVleet struck out nine and carried a no-hitter through four innings against Carroll and Fisher threw a complete-game one-hitter against Kean. Fisher had three hits and four RBIs on the day and Brianna Chaplin had a team-high four hits and one home run.
The Storm (8-3) tallied their second win over a top-25 team this season, adding to their season-opening 11-4 victory over then-No. 25 Wis.-Oshkosh on Feb. 26.
Simpson 4, Carroll 2
VanVleet struck out nine in a complete-game three-hitter and Fisher had a clutch two-RBI single in the fifth that proved to be the difference.
Simpson led 2-0 in the fifth when Chaplin singled with two outs and Grace Hall walked. A wild pitch put runners at first and second and Fisher responded with her only hit of the game to drive in what would be the winning runs.
VanVleet was perfect through four innings before allowing two runs - one earned - off three hits in the fifth. She retired the final six batters in order, striking out the side in the seventh to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Simpson 7, Kean 0
Fisher struck out five, improving to 4-0 on the year while handcuffing a Kean team that won a super regional a year ago.
Chaplin homered to start the scoring in the second inning before Simpson pulled away with a four-run fourth. Fisher drove in the first run of the inning, Annie Stolte doubled in another and Taylor Davis came through with two-out, two-RBI single to give the Storm a 6-0 lead.
Chaplin finished the game 3-for-3 as the Storm touched-up Cougar pitcher Shannon McMahon for six earned runs on 10 hits.
