Kim walk off gives Storm dramatic win in split with Buena Vista

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Arianna Kim hit a walk-off single to complete an improbable three-run ninth inning in game two as the Simpson softball team beat Buena Vista 6-5, salvaging a split after losing game one 7-2 on Tuesday night.

The night provided plenty of fireworks and clutch plays as two of the Iowa Conference's top teams clashed.

The Beavers (19-14, 6-4) trailed 2-1 in the opener before getting six runs in the seventh, highlighted by a three-run homer from Autmn Boland.

The other Boland - Cheyanne - hit a solo homer in the seventh inning of game two to force extras, tying the score 3-3. Buena Vista got two in the ninth to take a 5-3 lead before the bottom of Simpson's lineup came up with three hits, including a leadoff double by Brianna Chaplin and run-scoring singles by Riley Fisher and Annie Stolte.

Kim drove in pinch-runner Paige Lammers from third on a single that got through the left side, capping off a three-hit game for the freshman. She finished the day 5-for-8.

The 6-through-9 hitters had seven hits and five RBIs in game two for the Storm (28-7, 7-3), who remained in a tie for second in the league standings after Central split with Coe. The No. 6 hitter, Chaplin went 2-for-4, No. 7 hitter Grace Hall went 2-for-3, No. 8 hitter Fisher went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and No. 9 hitter Stolte went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Fisher (13-1) went the distance in the circle in game two, giving up five runs - all earned - on nine hits with six strikeouts and five walks. Moriah Guyett (9-6) suffered the loss, allowing six runs - all earned - on 11 hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Simpson scored its first three runs in the fourth, getting an RBI double from Hall, a sacrifice fly by Fisher and a run-scoring single by Stolte. Simpson led 3-0 before Buena Vista crept back into the game with single tallies in the fifth, sixth and seventh.

Rachel Guessford drove in both runs in game one, putting Simpson up 2-1 on a single in the sixth. Buena Vista took the lead on a two-RBI double by ReAnn Cappel in the seventh before Boland broke it open with a three-run shot to left.

Abbie VanVleet (10-3) suffered the loss, giving up all seven runs off 12 hits with six strikeouts. Jenna Falline (9-7) got the win, going the distance while allowing one earned run off seven hits with two strikeouts.

Up next: Simpson goes to Wartburg on Saturday, April 19. The Knights (13-21, 3-5) shocked the league by run-ruling No. 2 Luther 12-4 in a split Tuesday night.
