KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Simpson softball team ran its winning streak to eight with a pair of wins Wednesday at the Rebel Spring Games, beating Farmingdale State 2-1 and Montclair State 7-3.
The Storm (14-3) got another strong effort in the circle from Abbie VanVleet in the opener and survived some tense moments down the stretch to get the win. Maggie Long struck out 10 in a relief effort against Montclair State as Simpson came back from an early 2-0 deficit.
Simpson 2, Farmingdale State 1
The reigning Iowa Conference Pitcher of the Week, VanVleet allowed five hits and no earned runs but had to work her way out of a jam in bottom of the seventh. With one run in, the Rams (0-1) had runners at second and third with one out before VanVleet (6-0) got a strikeout and a groundout to end it.
Arianna Kim drove in Annie Stolte to give Simpson a 1-0 lead in the third and a bases-loaded single by Tori Haag provided a much-needed insurance run in the sixth.
Out of Farmingdale, N.Y., the Rams have won five straight Skyline Conference titles and qualified for the regional round of the NCAA Tournament in 2015.
Simpson 7, Montclair State 3
Long got Simpson out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the first and held the Red Hawks to four hits the rest of the way. Coming on in relief after a rare early exit by Riley Fisher, Long (2-2) struck out 10 and stopped the bleeding after Montclair State put up two runs in the top of the first.
Simpson responded with six runs in the home half of the first, getting a double, a single and two RBIs from Tori Haag. The Storm took advantage of two Red Hawk errors, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring four unearned runs.
Haag and Taylor Davis each had three hits to lead the Storm.
With her two doubles against Montclair State, Haag moves within one of tying Simpson's career record. The senior has 38 doubles in her career, trailing only Ashley Prettyman's 39 (2013-15).
