Bats stay hot, Simpson starts 6-0

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Simpson softball team continued to swing for the fences Sunday, slugging six home runs and tallying wins over Carroll (Wis.) and Wis.-Oshkosh to close opening weekend 6-0 at the Finlandia Dome Tournament.

Simpson beat Carroll 7-0 and came back for a 3-1 win over Oshkosh, capping an impressive opening weekend in which the Storm hit 20 home runs in six games.

Head coach Henry Christowski picked up career win No. 599, improving 599-200-2 in his 20th season at the helm.

"We played exceptionally good softball this weekend," Christowski said.

Abbie VanVleet brought a perfect game into the the fifth inning and Tori Haag had a triple, home run and four RBIs to lead the Storm in the win over Carroll.

Hailey Jensen and Ashley Prettyman also homered.

Against Oshkosh, Simpson got behind 1-0 after leadoff home run in the first but responded with three solo homers to get the win.

Britney Steele hit the game-tying homer in the second and stroked the go-ahead blast to center in the fifth. Jensen homered to left in the sixth to add an insurance run.

Riley Fisher threw a complete-game, two-hitter to improve to 3-0.

Haag and Rachel Guessford each hit .500 on the weekend ... Haag hit five home runs and drove in 14 and Guessford hit four long balls and drove in 11 ... four Simpson pitchers finished the weekend with a combined 1.14 ERA, holding opponents to a .155 batting average ... Fisher went 3-0 with 1.65 ERA, VanVleet went 2-0 with a 1.40 ERA, Kaytlyn Ernst went 1-0, throwing eight hitless innings and Maggie Long threw two hitless innings.
