Simpson slugs its way to 4-0 start

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Simpson softball team hit 14 home runs, outscored opponents 40-5 and slugged its way to a perfect 4-0 start on the first day of the Finlandia Dome Tournament at the Superior Dome.

Simpson (4-0) run-ruled all but one opponent – Concordia (Wis.) – but still managed to win by 10 runs thanks to seven runs in the final two innings. The Storm beat Wis.-Superior 11-2 in five innings, Edgewood 9-1 in five innings, Lakeland 8-0 in six innings and Concordia 12-2 in their lone seven-inning game of the day.

Tori Haag and Rachel Guessford led the home run parade with four apiece, while Abbie VanVleet added three. Simpson hit five home runs each against Superior and Concordia, getting two apiece from Haag and VanVleet in the Superior game.

Haag, a junior catcher, tallied 10 RBIs from the leadoff spot in the lineup.

Junior transfer Riley Fisher went 2-0 in the circle, getting wins over Edgewood and Concordia. VanVleet got the win against Superior in the opener and Kaytlyn Ernst went all six innings in the win over Lakeland.
