WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Simpson softball team picked up a pair of three-run victories at the Rebel Spring Games on Saturday, beating Wheaton (Mass.) 3-0 and coming back to top Mitchell 5-2.
The Storm improved to 10-0 on the year and 4-0 in Florida thanks to strong pitching. Abbie VanVleet earned the complete-game shutout against Wheaton and freshman Maggie Long earned the win in relief against Mitchell.
Simpson 3, Wheaton 0
VanVleet scattered five hits and struck out three with one walk, improving to 4-0 on the season. Stacie Brown broke a scoreless tie with an RBI single in the third and Simpson held on for the win against the Lyons, who qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2014. VanVleet earned a bases-loaded walk and Brown finished with two hits.
Simpson 5, Mitchell 2
Rachel Guessford drove in the game-tying run in the fourth and Hailey Jensen had the go-ahead RBI on a single in the fifth as the Storm came back for the win. Long (1-0) came on in relief in the third inning, striking out seven and allowing just four hits over the final 4 2/3 innings. Guessford, Tori Haag and Kinsey Van Houten each had two hits for the Storm, who trailed 1-0 after three.
