Hall, Haag homers help Storm to split with Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa - The No. 10 Simpson softball team scored seven runs in the fourth inning of a game one win, but couldn't figure out Moriah Guyett in game two, splitting a doubleheader with Buena Vista on Saturday.

Simpson won game one 10-4 and dropped game two 5-0.

Game 1: Simpson 10, Buena Vista 4

Grace Hall and Tori Haag hit back-to-back homers twice - in the fourth and sixth innings - as the Storm (22-6, 1-3 Iowa Conference) came back to beat Buena Vista 10-4 in the opener.

Hall, who finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs, hit a three-run homer to spark a seven-run fourth. Haag followed with a solo shot to help Simpson turn a 3-0 deficit to a 7-3 lead. Leading 7-4, Hall and Haag hit consecutive home runs for the second time in the sixth.

Riley Fisher (9-2) went six innings in the win, allowing four runs off six hits. She settled down after allowing three runs in the first, holding Buena Vista to one run over her final five innings.

Game 2: Buena Vista 5, Simpson 0

Guyett threw a one-hitter in the nightcap as the Beavers (11-12, 2-2) shut out Simpson 5-0.

Guyett struck out nine without a walk, a base hit by Fisher in the third the only blemish on her scorecard.

Marissa Schmidt hit an RBI single in the first and drove in another in the sixth, more than enough help for Guyett.

Abbie VanVleet (10-3) allowed five runs off seven hits in the loss.
