INDIANOLA, Iowa – Tori Haag led an offensive onslaught in game one, drove in the game-winning run in game two and Riley Fisher went 2-0 in the circle as the Simpson softball team picked up a much-needed sweep over Coe on Tuesday afternoon, 9-0 and 4-1.
Reeling after a 1-5 start in conference play, a sweep over its biggest nemesis over the past few years may be just what Simpson needed. Tuesday's game-one win snapped a seven-game losing streak against Coe while the sweep is Simpson's first against the Kohawks since 2010.
Simpson needed just four innings to put up nine runs in the opener, run-ruling Coe in five. Simpson's offense chased ace Arran Weeces from the game in the third, tagging the conference's strikeout leader for eight runs on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Haag did most of the damage for the Storm (24-8, 3-5 Iowa Conference), going 2-for-2 and roping a three-RBI double as part of a four-run third. Abbie VanVleet also went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and Rachel Guessford went 3-for-3 with a run driven in.
In the nightcap, Simpson trailed 1-0 before VanVleet and pinch-hitter Brianna Chaplin hit back-to-back doubles with two outs in the fifth. Chaplin's two-bagger to the gap in left drove in the game-tying run before Haag brought in the go-ahead run with an infield single.
Helped by two Coe errors, Simpson added two runs in the sixth to hand starter Maliah Fligg the hard-luck loss. Fligg (5-6) allowed just two earned runs for the Kohawks (19-13, 3-5).
Simpson got two strong performances from Fisher, who cruised to the win in game one after surrendering just three hits in five innings. Thanks to a leadoff walk, Fisher (11-3) got behind 1-0 in game two but kept Coe off the board the next four frames.
Fisher left the game with Simpson leading 2-1 in the sixth, letting VanVleet record the final two outs. VanVleet got the first two outs of the seventh before Maggie Long came on for her first career save.
Up Next
Simpson continues its four-game homestand Saturday, April 18 against Loras. The Duhawks (16-14, 3-5) were idle Wednesday.
