Storm knocked out of NCAA Tournament

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Simpson's second look at Morgan Stratton yielded familiar results as the Storm lost to Alma 8-0 in the Regional Championship game Sunday afternoon.

The tournament's Most Outstanding Player, Stratton held Simpson to five hits, eliminating the Storm (31-12) from the NCAA Division III Championship. Alma advances to Super Regional play.

Simpson also lost to Stratton on Saturday, getting just three hits in a 2-1 loss.

Needing two wins to advance, Simpson was able to generate scoring chances but couldn't dent the plate on Stratton, who didn't allow an earned run in three games on the weekend.

Brianna Chaplin hit what appeared to be an RBI single with two outs in the second, driving in Abbie VanVleet from second. Britney Steele was thrown out trying to advance to third, though, and the umpires ruled that Steele was tagged out prior to the run.

Simpson left the bases loaded in the fourth and stranded nine on the day.

Devan Olah went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Brooke Hein had three hits and two RBIs to lead the Scots (28-15), who were the fourth seed in the four-team region. Alma held a 1-0 lead after the first before getting two in the fifth and one in the sixth. Up 4-0, an RBI-double by Olah sparked a four-run seventh to extend the lead to 8-0.

Steele, VanVleet and Stacie Brown were named to the all-tournament team. Steele hit .400 with a home run and four RBIs, VanVleet hit .333 with a home run and a tournament-high six RBIs and Brown hit .385 with two doubles and a tournament-best five hits.
