Frazier shines at Kansas, Wheatley flies at Central

Isaac Frazier put up one of the nation's top efforts in the decathlon at the Kansas Relays and Emmitt Wheatley posted some of the fastest sprint times in the Iowa Conference at the Central Open to highlight the Simpson men's track and field team's performances last week.

Frazier and fellow multi-event athlete Trey Moddelmogg competed at the Kansas Relays on Wednesday and Thursday while the rest of the squad made the short trip to Pella for the Central Open on Saturday. No team scores were kept at Central.

FRAZIER POSTS TOP-20 EFFORT AT KU

The defending Iowa Conference Field MVP indoors, Frazier has his sights set on the outdoor crown as well, and made a big statement last weekend. The only non-Division I competitor in the top 10, Frazier scored 5,948 points to place 10th. The mark is tops in the IIAC and currently No. 18 in Division III. His top events were the high jump (2nd, 6-feet, 3 1/2 inches), 110-meter hurdles (4th, 15.24), shot put (6th, 36-feet, 10 1/4 inches) and 100 meters (7th, 11.43).

A freshman and Kansas native, Moddelmogg scored 4,713 points without registering a legal attempt in the discus. He placed 13th in both the high jump (5-feet, 7 1/4 inches) and 400 meters (54.46).

WHEATLEY PUTS ON A SHOW AT CENTRAL

Wheatley entered in three events and won three events at Central, finishing first in the 100 and 200 meters and helping the 4x100-meter relay to a title. He ran the IIAC's fastest time in the 100, breaking the tape in 10.75 seconds. The time is good for 20th in Division III and ranks third in school history. He ran 21.92 in the 200, currently No. 3 in the IIAC and sixth in school history. He ran the lead leg in Simpson's 4x100, which finished in a blistering 42.06 seconds. The time ranks third in the IIAC, 34th in Division III and is tied for second in school history. It marks the fastest 4x100 by a Simpson team since 1993. Chase Wetterling, Travis Tupper and Davey Jergens rounded out the relay.

OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES

Tupper broke 11 seconds in the 100 meters for the first time in his career to place second, finishing in 10.95. He also took fourth in the 200 (22.40) … Prince Krah ran a season-best 51.13 in the open 400 to place second … Kyle Hovey placed sixth in the 800, just missing a season-best (2:00.83) … The Storm went 2-3 in the 3,000 meters led by a season-best effort from Trey Thompson (9:21.39). Chad Carter followed (9:37.96) … Jordan Coughenour ran by himself in the 400 hurdles, narrowly missing a season-best after finishing in 56.73 seconds … The freshman-only 4x400 relay team of Wetterling, Kirk Wicks, Coughenour and Krah won in 3:19.83, currently the No. 3 time in the IIAC … Mitch Stoltzman won the pole vault, clearing season-high 13-feet, 9 1/4 inches.
