Coughenour, 4x1 win titles on final day of IIAC Championships

WAVERLY, Iowa - The Simpson men's track and field team posted four, top-three finishes and took home two conference titles on the final day of the 2016 Iowa Conference Championships from Walston-Hoover Stadium on Saturday.

Jordan Coughenour won the 400-meter hurdles in 54.43 seconds, tying a career-best for the sophomore from Maxwell, Iowa. The quartet of Emmitt Wheatley, Dylan Kalinay, Travis Tupper and Davey Jergens bested the field in the 4x100-meter relay, breaking the school record for the third time this season by running 41.74, currently the No. 30 time in Division III. The title marks the first for a 4x100-meter relay team in head coach Dave Cleveland's 11 seasons at the helm.

The men's team scored 90 points to finish sixth while the women's team placed eighth.

Wheatley and Kalinay had a pair of second-place finishes for the Storm as Wheatley came in second in the 100-meter dash (10.88) and Kalinay was the runner up in the 110-meter hurdles (14.41). 

Both scored points in the 200 as Wheatley placed fourth (21.90) and Kalinay came in fifth (22.03). 

Isaac Frazier closed a busy weekend by taking fifth in the 110-meter hurdles and fifth in the triple jump. He ran 15.40 in the hurdles and hit the sand in 43-feet, 9-inches in the triple jump to account for 19 points in four events on the weekend.

Other notable men's performances: The 4x400-meter relay team of Coughenour, Chase Wetterling, Kirk Wicks and Prince Krah placed fifth (3:22.86) ... Wicks placed sixth in the open 400 (49.77) ... Trevor McKee scored a team point with an eighth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (57.06) ... Trey Moddelmogg placed eighth in the triple jump (41-5).

Other notable women's performances: Mary Doherty and Audrey LoVan placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the pole vault. Both cleared 9-feet, 1/4-inches but Doherty took sixth based on fewer misses ... Annie Gullickson placed seventh in the discus with a throw of 130-feet, 2-inches, a career-best.
