Kalinay, 4x1 enjoy huge day at Loras

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Dylan Kalinay posted one of the top 110-meter hurdle times in the nation and the 4x100-meter relay team shattered the school record for the second time in two weeks as the Simpson track and field team tuned up for the Iowa Conference Championships at Loras' Dr. Tucker Invitational on Friday.

Kalinay stole the show by running 14.38 in the prelims of the 110-meter hurdles, the No. 6 time in Division III and the top time in the IIAC. With the performance, Kalinay is all but assured a spot at nationals after running the third-fastest time in school history and fastest since 1991.

Not to be outdone, the 4x100-meter relay team of Kalinay, Emmitt Wheatley, Travis Tupper and Davey Jergens shattered the school record set just seven days earlier.

A week ago, the team of Kalinay, Wheatley, Tupper and Chase Wetterling broke a 23-year old school record by running 41.92 at the Drake Relays. This time around, with Jergens in the relay, the Storm reached a new best, finishing in 41.75. The time is second in the IIAC and 27th in Division III.

Jordan Coughenour enjoyed a big night as well, posting the top 400-meter hurdle time in the Iowa Conference. The freshman finished in 54.43 to win the race, a new personal best by 0.75 seconds.

On the women's side, Simpson fared well in the 800, placing three runners in the top six. Each Storm runner – Rebecca Diemer (3rd, 2:26.09), Courtney Neuendorf (5th, 2:27.04) and Breanna Gaster (6th, 2:27.07) – set a career best during the race.

Other notable performances: The men's 4x400-meter relay team consisting entirely of freshmen turned in the No. 3 time in the IIAC to place second on Friday. Wetterling, Prince Krah, Kirk Wicks and Coughenour ran 3:17.58, the 30th time in Division III … with Kalinay opting out of the finals in the 110 hurdles, Isaac Frazier took advantage by winning the race and posting the No. 5 time in the IIAC with a new personal-best time of 14.93 … Frazier also won the high jump (6-4 3/4) … long jumping for the first time during the outdoor season, Wheatley placed second with the No. 3 effort in the IIAC (21-10). He also placed second in the 200 (21.99) … the women's pole-vaulting duo of Mary Doherty and Audrey LoVan tied for sixth place, clearing 9-4 1/4. The effort is a career-best for Doherty, a senior.

Up next: Simpson goes to the Iowa Conference Championships beginning Thursday, May 12. This year's championships take place in Waverly and are hosted by Wartburg.
