FAYETTE, Iowa - Marcus Varnum scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute, his second of the game as the Simpson men's soccer team beat Upper Iowa 2-1 on Thursday afternoon.
Varnum connected on the winner from the top of the box in the 86th minute, helping the Storm (4-2) salvage a win despite being outshot 20-8.
The junior also scored in the fourth minute when he intercepted a pass from the goalkeeper and gave Simpson the early 1-0 advantage.
Aaron Calkins came up with the equalizer for the NCAA Division II Peacocks (1-1-1), taking advantage of his own rebound in the 60th minute to make the score 1-1.
Zach McEntee made five saves in goal for the Storm and freshman Garrett Pochop assisted on Varnum's second goal.
Game Notes: Varnum increased his career goals scored total to 13 with the second, multi-goal effort of his career ... Thursday marks the second time this season Simpson has won despite being outshot ... the Storm were also outshot (12-8) in the season opener against Bethel, a 2-0 win ... Simpson is off until Monday, Sept. 15 when it makes the short trip to Des Moines to face AIB at 6 p.m.
