Men's soccer bows out of IIAC Tournament with loss to Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Simpson men's soccer team outplayed Dubuque in almost every facet of the game - except for the scoreboard - in a 3-1 Iowa Conference Tournament loss on Saturday.

Fifth-seeded Simpson outshot fourth-seeded Dubuque 23-14 and held a 14-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Leo Lenth gave the Spartans (7-8-3) a 2-0 lead in the 30th minute and the goal held as the game-winner.

Following a Dubuque handball in the box, Mitchell White converted a penalty kick to cut the lead to 2-1 in the 59th minute, but Simpson couldn't manage another score.

Brandon Wiley put the game away when he found the back of the net in the 84th minute on an assist from Gonzalo Hernandez, who scored the first goal of the game.

Marcus Varnum and Josh Harry put three shots on goal apiece and Zach McEntee made eight saves in goal for the Storm (12-9), who saw their season come to a close.
