Men's soccer can't make most of opportunities in loss to Augustana

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Simpson men's soccer team controlled play for a majority of its non-conference match against Augustana (Ill.) on Tuesday night.

But it was the Vikings who made the most of the opportunities they were given.

Ian Deggendorf went far post from 12 yards out in the 84th minute, nullifying Simpson's four-shot advantage in the second half and giving Augustana (8-4) a 2-1 win.

"We just aren't doing the little things that lead to wins right now," head coach Rick Isaacson said. "We are playing some of the best teams in the region competitively, but we just aren't scratching out wins."

The Storm (9-6) tied the contest just 13 minutes earlier when Tyler Neumann executed a jaw-dropping header on a long through ball from Josh Harry. Neumann laid out for the serve by Harry and scored his second goal of the season, tying the match 1-1 in the 71st minute.

"It was a great ball by Josh and Tyler timed his run perfectly. The quality of the finish was clinical," Isaacson said. "The goal we scored was a great build-up and was well-executed, unfortunately we didn't do that enough."

Simpson had its chances, out-shooting Augustana 10-7 on the game and 8-4 in the second half, a trend that has been developing throughout the season.

In each of its six losses, Simpson has held an advantage in either shots, shots on goal or corner kicks. On average, Simpson out-shoots its opponents 10.67-10 in its six losses.

"In soccer if you aren't capitalizing on the handful of opportunities you get then you aren't going to get a positive result," Isaacson said.

The Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute when Jonathan Colucci rebounded Adam Witucki's shot off the crossbar and capitalized from short range.
