Homers by Porter, Marquez fuel upset victory over No. 24 Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa – Home runs by Sam Porter and Matthew Marquez propelled the Simpson College baseball team to a 10-8 upset victory over No. 24 Buena Vista in the first game of Sunday's American Rivers Conference twin bill.

Fueled by two five-run innings, the Beavers won the rubber match 16-6 in seven innings.

Game 1: Simpson 10, Buena Vista 8
A pair of long balls accounted for half of Simpson's 10 runs as Porter gave the visitors a 3-2 edge with a two-run shot in the second before Marquez stretched the lead to four with a three-run bomb to center field in the third.

In the sixth frame, Buena Vista (29-7, 20-3 A-R-C) took its first lead since the first inning with a couple of RBI singles. Simpson went right back in front in the seventh though as Marquez scored on a wild pitch and Porter plated Lucas Juhl with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Storm dodged a couple of bullets in the seventh and eighth innings before adding an insurance tally in the ninth. Ty Cowley led off the inning with a single and Marquez and Juhl followed with base hits of their own to increase Simpson's lead to 10-8. The Storm permitted two runners to reach via a walk and an error in the ninth, but held on for the win as Dylan Schlee caught right fielder Calvin Harris looking for the final out.

Simpson (15-22, 5-16 A-R-C) racked up 15 hits in the game led by Brady Held and Juhl with three apiece. Marquez and Porter each tallied three RBIs to lead the team.

Game 2: Buena Vista 16, Simpson 6 (7 innings)
The Beavers built up a 5-0 advantage through the first four innings, but the Storm cut the deficit to two in the fifth thanks to a two-run single from Marquez and an infield hit by Will Carlock.

The Storm scored another three runs in the seventh, but still found themselves trailing by five after Buena Vista plated five runs in the home half of the fifth. The Beavers exploded for five more runs in the seventh to secure the run-rule victory and series win.

Bennett Wadstrom was 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored, while Juhl was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Marquez added two more RBIs to his name to end the day with five total.
