Simpson falls twice on Sunday

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Simpson College baseball team wrapped up its opening weekend with a pair of games against St. Norbert and Augustana at the Future Champions Sports Complex.

The Storm (0-3) were defeated 16-7 in a rematch with St. Norbert (2-1) and lost a late lead in game two against Augustana (2-3), falling 7-3.

Matthew Marquez led the team with four hits, going 4-for-8 overall with two runs scored and one RBI. Ian Baldwin tallied three hits, two RBIs and a run scored, and Ty Cowley had two hits, two RBIs and a run scored.

Game 1: St. Norbert 16, Simpson 7
The Green Knights put up 10 runs before the Storm got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Bennett Wadstrom led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a double from Cowley. Marquez brought Wadstrom home with a single and Brennen Lemke drew a walk to load the bases, but St. Norbert ended the threat with a double play.

The two teams traded a pair of runs in the seventh inning and a triple from Marquez followed by a double from Lemke brought the score to 12-4 in the bottom of the eighth. The Green Knights added four more insurance tallies in the ninth, but Simpson continued to battle and scored three runs on two hits in the home half to place the final score at 16-7.

Marquez went 3-for-4 with a walk and an RBI, while Cowley went 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs. Baldwin drove in two runs and Aiden Rupprecht had two hits.

Game 2: Augustana 7, Simpson 3
The Storm tallied six of their eight hits between the first two innings while building a 3-1 lead thanks to RBIs by Zach Fuller and Lucas Juhl.

Augustana got one run back in the fifth inning before exploding for five runs in the bottom of the eighth fueled by a three-run homer by Dymitri Kanellakis.

Baldwin had a pair of hits to lead Simpson on offense. Easton Dunwoody made his first start of the season on the mound and threw five innings, allowing two runs on one hit with three walks and six strikeouts.

Simpson is set to host St. Olaf for a three-game home series on March 4-5. The two teams are slated to play two games on Saturday and one Sunday, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. on both days.
