Loras breaks late tie to defeat Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Loras scored four runs in the top of the ninth to break a late tie and beat the Simpson College baseball team, 10-6, in a back-and-forth contest Tuesday night.

The series finale was tied on four occasions and saw a combined 25 hits between the two squads. Simpson tallied 15 hits, while Loras had 10 including four in the final inning.

The Storm took their first lead of the contest with a two-run double off the bat of Ian Baldwin in the fourth inning. Will Carlock pushed the advantage to two, 4-2, with a run-scoring single through the right side one inning later, but Loras (16-10, 7-4 A-R-C) responded with three runs in the sixth to steal the lead back.

Three straight singles from Baldwin, Matthew Marquez and Brady Held leveled the game again in the home half of the sixth, and the two teams traded a run in the seventh to place the score at 6-6.

After Dylan Schlee retired the side with three swinging strikeouts, Simpson loaded the bases with two outs. Marquez singled and advanced to third on an error, Held was intentionally walked and Jack Shaffer reached via a walk of his own, but the Duhawks managed to get out of the jam to keep the score tied going into the final inning.

Loras filled the bases quickly in the ninth, but Simpson put two away with a fly out and a fielder's choice. Tyler Pransky broke the tie with his third hit of the game, a two-run single up the middle, and the Duhawks added two more with a single and a defensive miscue. The Storm got two runners on board in the home half, but left them stranded.

Marquez and Baldwin led the Storm (11-16, 1-10 A-R-C) with three hits apiece, while Held and Brennen Lemke each chipped in two. Lemke and Shaffer each registered triples in the contest, Simpson's first game with multiple triples this season.
