Storm suffer second straight extra-inning home loss

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Simpson College baseball team suffered its second straight extra-inning loss at McBride Field on Saturday as Coe came away with a 4-3 series-opening win in 11 innings.

After a quick 1-2-3 inning by Trey Castile, the Storm rattled off five hits and scored twice in the bottom of the first. Matthew Marquez scored on Ty Cowley's single to center field and Brady Held, who doubled to left center, came home on a sacrifice fly from Will Carlock.

Castile retired the next six batters he faced and allowed just two walks between the fourth and fifth as Simpson clung to its 2-0 advantage. The senior hurler lost his no-hitter with two outs in the sixth when Jack Allison singled to left field, igniting a rally which saw the Kohawks convert three runs.

In the eighth inning, Cowley was hit-by-pitch and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Carlock. Lucas Juhl leveled the contest with a base hit down the first base line, but the Storm were unable to do more damage and left two stranded. Simpson had another huge opportunity to regain the lead in the ninth, but Coe escaped the bases-loaded jam to send the game into extras.

The Kohawks (15-14, 7-9 A-R-C) were the first to put a runner on base in extras as Tyce Johnson hit a two-out double in the top of the 11th. Coe drew a walk before pinch hitter Daniel Hawes gave his team the lead and eventual win with a single through the left side.

Marquez led the team with three hits, his 11th multi-hit game of the season and third with two doubles. Juhl and Aiden Rupprecht also had multiple base knocks to help the Storm (14-18, 4-12 A-R-C) outhit their guests 9-6.

Castile finished the day with eight strikeouts in six innings, yielding three runs on two hits with six walks. Max Crooks and Andrew Weig each threw a pair of scoreless innings before the Kohawks tagged Weig with a run in the 11th.
